Courtside Forever is a podcast for parents swept up in the circus of everyday problems who, despite the world’s best efforts, are still dedicated to seeking intentional moments with their kids. I’m your host, Ryan Rucker, and each week, I will bring you a new episode made for you. We’ll keep it brief for some weeks, diving into a specific topic such as Youth Sports or Paternity Leave in America. These 15-20 minute episodes will focus on overarching themes, statistics, and practical next steps parents can take. In other weeks, we’ll extend our conversations, inviting parents in sports, business, and other industries to look at how they center parenthood in their lives and touch on our inevitable struggles while building a career, business, and future. Whether you’re a dad or mom or thinking of stepping into the role someday, Courtside Forever is a podcast that aims to recenter the world we’re building for our kids. In 2024, The United States of America declared parenting a public health crisis, citing the way society is set up for the reason we struggle. In the document created by the US Department of Health and Services Department, Parents Under Pressure, Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy stated, “Raising children is sacred work. It should matter to all of us. And the health and well-being of those who are caring for our children should matter to us as well.” In 2020, I hosted and produced the 8-episode docuseries Complicated Fatherhood, where I spent each episode speaking to my biological dad to understand how his absence from my life affected my Fatherhood. Since wrapping the podcast, I knew I wanted to get back into podcasting, and Courtside Forever is a continuation of my mantra to be ever present in my daughters’ lives. On Courtside Forever, we’ll have fun, get serious, tell stories, and work to focus on the only thing that matters because, as parents, we’ve got the best seats in the house. Let’s enjoy them.

Tuesday Dec 03, 2024
I’m beyond excited to bring you this very special episode of Courtside Forever—our first-ever interview! When I put together this podcast, I knew I wanted a mix of solo episodes and interviews. As a writer, the solo pods are my playground to expand on topics I love. But as a professional interviewer with nearly two decades of experience, nothing beats sitting down with someone and uncovering the heart of their story.
Today’s guest is a true inspiration and one of my oldest friends: Mike Rogge, owner and editor of Mountain Gazette. Mike’s story is one for the ages. A few years back, he purchased the once-dormant publication with a history that dates back to 1966 and has since transformed it into one of the largest print magazines in the U.S. His dedication to his readers, his family, and his craft is unparalleled.
Mike and I go way back—our families share a deep connection, and we even attended our first concert together (take a guess—it’s not who you think!). Growing up in Queensbury, NY, just outside the Adirondacks, Mike’s life has always been steeped in skiing and the mountains. Today, he and his family live in Tahoe, where he continues to grow Mountain Gazette while staying deeply connected to his roots.
In this episode, we dive into Mike’s journey:
- His earliest memories of skiing and how his family shaped his love for the sport.
- The bold decision to revive Mountain Gazette and the process of bringing it back to life.
- Staying true to his values, even when faced with tempting opportunities for growth.
- How fatherhood influences his approach to both business and life.
Mike’s commitment to purpose over profit and his devotion to his family are as inspiring as they come. He’s a testament to what it means to lead with integrity, whether in fatherhood, business, or storytelling.
So grab a seat, courtside, for this incredible story of passion, perseverance, and staying true to your people.

Tuesday Nov 26, 2024
Tuesday Nov 26, 2024
In Episode 3 of Courtside Forever, host Ryan Rucker dives deep into a growing crisis that impacts us all: the mental health and well-being of parents. Inspired by the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2024 advisory, Parents Under Pressure, this episode explores the immense challenges modern parents face in balancing work, caregiving, and societal expectations.
Ryan begins by sharing personal stories and statistics that highlight the staggering pressures parents endure today—pressures that are amplified by rising costs, demanding work schedules, and a lack of genuine community support. Drawing on the advisory’s findings, he dissects the link between parental stress and mental health, emphasizing how unchecked stress can ripple into every aspect of family life, from strained relationships to children’s long-term well-being.
Listeners will hear about the personal struggles Ryan faced as a working dad, including battling paternal postpartum depression and navigating unsympathetic work environments. Through these stories, Ryan underscores the importance of acknowledging and addressing mental health issues in parents—not just for their benefit but for the stability and success of future generations.
This episode doesn’t stop at identifying the problems. Ryan shares actionable solutions, both individual and societal, to improve parenting in America. From advocating for paid family leave and flexible work policies to building supportive communities, he challenges listeners to rethink how society values caregivers. Ryan also offers practical tips for parents to nurture their mental health, connect with others, and find small but meaningful ways to care for themselves.
Through empathy, humor, and honesty, Ryan reminds parents that their struggles are valid and their work is sacred. Courtside Forever champions the idea that parenting is the most important job we’ll ever have—and that supporting parents today is the key to building a better tomorrow.

Paternity Leave Is Not a Vacation | Changing The Narrative For Dads | Episode 2
Tuesday Nov 19, 2024
Tuesday Nov 19, 2024
In this episode of Courtside Forever, we dive into the thought-provoking story of Rudy Gobert, 4x NBA Defensive Player of the Year, who faced an extraordinary decision during the 2024 NBA playoffs. As the Minnesota Timberwolves competed in a pivotal playoff series, Gobert chose to miss Game 2 to witness the birth of his first child. His decision sparked widespread debate about the intersection of professional commitments, family priorities, and societal expectations of fatherhood.
Gobert’s story is not just about basketball—it’s a lens into a broader conversation on paternity leave and the evolving role of fathers in the modern era. Despite the overwhelming support from his team, Gobert faced criticism from some voices in the sports world, including former All-NBA guard Gilbert Arenas, who questioned his decision to prioritize family over a playoff game. Arenas’s comments, along with those of others, reveal a lingering cultural tension: should men sacrifice professional duties for personal milestones, and is it acceptable to put family first, even on the biggest stages?
This episode explores these pressing questions and more. Using Gobert’s story as a springboard, we examine the challenges and opportunities surrounding paternity leave in the United States. From navigating outdated societal norms to dealing with limited workplace support, we highlight the hurdles that many fathers face when trying to be more present for their families. Host Ryan Rucker shares personal anecdotes about his own paternity leave experiences, shedding light on the stark differences between workplaces that support family needs and those that fall short.
We also delve into the benefits of paternity leave for families and children, backed by statistics and compelling studies. Did you know that fathers who take just two weeks of leave are more likely to actively engage in early childcare tasks and build stronger bonds with their children? These moments are about more than just time off—they’re about setting a foundation for family success and challenging outdated notions of masculinity that prioritize work above all else.
But this episode isn’t just about advocacy; it’s also packed with actionable advice. Ryan provides tips for fathers considering paternity leave, from researching its benefits and navigating workplace policies to having meaningful conversations with partners and advocating for better family-friendly practices.
As we wrap up, Ryan leaves listeners with a powerful reminder: work is temporary, but family is forever. Paternity leave isn’t just a perk—it’s an investment in the people who matter most.
Join us for this inspiring, thought-provoking episode of Courtside Forever as we celebrate dads, redefine priorities, and champion the idea that the best seats in the house are the ones where we show up for our families.

Youth Sports in America | Are we pushing our kids too hard? | Episode 1
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024
In this debut episode of Courtside Forever, host Ryan Rucker tackles a pressing issue in youth sports: Are sports still about fun, or have they become more of a grind driven by adult expectations?
Drawing from personal experiences and statistics, Ryan explores the evolving culture of youth sports, the pressure young athletes face, and the pivotal role parents and coaches play in shaping kids’ experiences on and off the field. This episode is a must-listen for parents, coaches, and anyone invested in making youth sports a positive, enriching experience.
We dive into the changing culture of youth sports, where more kids are feeling like they’re in high-stakes competition rather than simply playing a game. Ryan shares stories from the sidelines, where adult expectations and behavior can make or break a child’s experience, and highlights alarming statistics on youth sports burnout, with 70% of kids quitting by age 13 due to excessive pressure.
Ryan discusses the impact of high expectations on young athletes and how pressure from parents and coaches affects kids’ enjoyment, confidence, and mental well-being. With insights into the dangers of comparing young athletes to pros and expecting them to perform at adult levels, this episode examines how these pressures lead to burnout and loss of interest in sports.
The episode also explores the role parents play in youth sports. From the sidelines to the car ride home, parents can unintentionally add stress. Ryan shares statistics showing that 36% of youth athletes cite their parents as the biggest source of stress, with real-life examples highlighting the powerful impact—positive or negative—of parental involvement.
Finally, Ryan offers solutions to make youth sports more enjoyable, focusing on shifting from performance pressure to fun and personal growth. With advice on encouraging positive reinforcement, celebrating effort over results, and promoting rest and balance, this episode shows how small changes can transform youth sports into an experience that builds resilience, confidence, and a lifelong love for the game.
